Original challenge

What are women actually trying to achieve when they seek wellness support, and could a service be designed around that need rather than expecting the customer to understand and select individual complementary-therapy modalities?

02 · Turning an idea into questions

Founder hypothesis · Under investigation

The polished idea gives way to the assumptions underneath.

KIALA can be hired to create or maintain a desired state. A woman comes with a job, how she needs or wants to feel, and KIALA curates and choreographs an appropriate wellness experience around that desired state rather than requiring her to begin by selecting individual complementary-therapy modalities herself.

03 · Customer discovery

Customer evidence

Founder intuition is a starting point, not the answer.

Study 01

n=20 Early Signal Review

Investigated understanding and perceptions of Massage, Reflexology and Acupressure.

  • Massage had the strongest familiarity and comprehension advantage.
  • Reflexology could be strongly preferred by some participants.
  • Acupressure presented the greatest terminology and comprehension challenge.
Design response

Stop developing Acupressure as a standalone top-level KIALA modality and instead consider appropriate techniques within Massage.

Study 01 did not validate KIALA’s later desired-state proposition.

Study 02

Research in Progress

A qualitative customer-discovery study is currently testing the deeper assumptions behind the proposition using a 12-participant purposive maximum-variation sample.

04 · Designing the service system

Design response

Time becomes the structure for curated choice.

30One 30-minute modality / experience
60Two 30-minute modalities choreographed into one experience
90Three 30-minute modalities choreographed into a longer journey

This is service architecture, not a treatment menu. The design work examines customer need, curation, choice, time and operational feasibility as one connected system.

05 · Choreography of care

Developing service-design principles

Agency, without asking the woman to manage the experience.

Design question

Can 30 minutes feel abundant rather than abbreviated?

Short does not mean rushed.

Efficient does not mean clinical.

Standardised does not mean impersonal.

06 · Prototyping the difficult bits

Prototype

Test the hardest transitions before scaling.

Hardest-First / Transition Stress-Test

Massage → Stress Buster™

versus

Stress Buster™ → Massage

Testing privacy, clothing, treatment medium, room configuration, equipment movement, customer disruption and transition time.

KIALA-created working tool

Transition Tax

Clock time lost + physical disruption + customer effort + practitioner effort + room-reset burden

This is a KIALA working evaluation concept, not an established academic methodology.

07 · When the service becomes space

Spatial prototype

Service requirements become a spatial hypothesis.

Concept · Visual spatial prototypeKIALA Concept Floor Plan V0.4 Isometric 3D Render
Isometric visual prototype derived from the developing KIALA floor plan concept, not an existing premises
Visual interpretation of a developing concept · Not a photograph of existing KIALA premises

The environment is being investigated as part of the service system, considering customer flow, practitioner flow, privacy, storage, room reset, accessibility, movement, changing, acoustic privacy and Transition Tax. The floor plan remains a spatial hypothesis, not a confirmed premises specification.

08 · Capital follows evidence

Working decision

KIALA does not earn more capital until the evidence justifies it.

01Research
02Low-cost prototype
03Controlled testing
04Paid pilot
05Hired space
06Larger investment only if justified

The route changed from the possibility of permanent premises towards staged evidence and controlled investment. That change demonstrates Business Innovation and commercial discipline, not failure of the original idea.

KIALA Innovation Board

Questions, observations, ideas, assumptions, tensions and things to come back to, arising through the work.

Question23 September 2026

How might KIALA become scalable without scaling out the human value customers came for?

Transfer ← Wellness Innovation Lab

Research-informed design question25 September 2026

At what point should the intended KIALA experience begin, and what role should the environment, arrival and transitions play in creating the customer's desired state?

Origin: Wellness Innovation Lab → Field Note. Relevant external research on servicescape, atmospheric cues, customer behaviour in service environments, the customer journey, pre-core, core and post-core encounters, and service choreography. It did not originate from KIALA customer interviews, and the personal experience behind the Field Note is not transferred as evidence.

This board sits alongside the formal development process. An item appearing here has not become an active hypothesis, research question, workstream or decision. It captures what arises naturally while the structured work is underway.
